Action Research

Action research is a process in which individuals examine their work environment or system and through research, try to improve it. Action research can be done individually or collaboratively. This type of research requires a five step process using problem formulation, data collection, data analysis, results, and action planning. I am currently in the process of using action research within my district. Rockwall I.S.D. has partnered with Dr.Robert Marzano and his research team to improve classroom instruction. The district is in its second year working with Dr. Marzano. We have moved away from a traditional school setting, to a professional learning community. We are looking at ways to improve instruction and communication. Through out the school year, the Marzano group with conduct classroom observational rounds. These rounds are geared to create conversations among observing teachers. These conversations will lead to discussions that will eventually improve instruction and communication. This is an on going process within my district. The process starts slow, but eventually changes are very apparent. Professional learning communities are designed so that teachers can communicate and work closely together to improve instruction. PLCs allow teachers to identify student needs, curriculum issues, and class room issues. The PLCs work to improve the areas.
